The short answer: Stretch jeans relax a little as you wear them, and they can lose their shape for good if heat and harsh washing damage the elastane. The biggest culprits are tumble dryers, hot washes and fabric softener. Wash cold (max 30°C / 86°F), inside out, skip the softener, always air dry, and start with the right size, and good stretch denim keeps its snug fit wear after wear.
You know the feeling. Fresh out of the wash, your jeans fit like a hug. By the end of the day the knees are baggy and the waistband has given up. Is that just what stretch denim does, or are you doing something wrong?
A bit of both, honestly. Some relaxing during the day is normal. Jeans that bag out more every week usually point to the fabric being damaged, often in the laundry. Here's what's happening and how to stop it.
Why do stretch jeans lose their shape?
Stretch denim is cotton woven together with a small amount of elastane (also known as spandex or Lycra). The cotton gives the denim feel. The elastane is the elastic that pulls the fabric back after you move.
Stretch jeans lose their shape for three main reasons:
- Heat. High temperatures in a tumble dryer or a hot wash damage elastane fibres. Once they're damaged they don't spring back, and that's when you see baggy knees and a loose seat.
- Fabric softener. It coats the fibres and can weaken the stretch over time.
- The wrong size. Jeans that are too big have nothing to recover to. Jeans that are much too tight get overstretched every time you wear them.
Normal wear also relaxes cotton a little during the day. That's why your jeans can feel snugger in the morning than in the evening. A good stretch jean should come back after a wash and a rest.
Do all stretch jeans stretch out the same amount?
No. The fabric blend, the weave and the type of stretch all play a part. Here are the blends from our own product descriptions:
| FITJEANS style | Fabric blend | Type of stretch |
|---|---|---|
| 360 High Waisted | 78.5% cotton, 14% polyester, 7.5% elastane | 4-way stretch in width and length, stretches about 15–20% in length, Recall-Technology |
| Contour and Contour Mid | 65.5% cotton, 31% polyester, 3.5% elastane | 2-way stretch in width, light denim |
| Flared, Flared Mid and Capri | 89% cotton, 6% polyester, 5% elastane | 2-way stretch in width |
| Pastel Flared and Pastel Flared Mid | 90% cotton, 6% polyester, 4% elastane | Stretch denim |
| Baggy and Baggy Low | 92% cotton, 4% polyester, 4% elastane | 2-way stretch in width |
| Pastel Baggy | 91% cotton, 5% polyester, 4% elastane | Stretch denim |
A few things to notice:
- More elastane means more stretch. 360 has the most, which is why it's our stretchiest skinny.
- Polyester helps recovery and durability. Contour has a higher polyester share and a light, leggings-like feel.
- Recall-Technology on 360 (and Flared Low) is designed to help the jeans keep their shape after washing and wearing.
- Higher cotton gives a more classic denim feel, like in Baggy, which is meant to be relaxed through the leg anyway.
Will my new jeans stretch out after the first wear?
Stretch jeans usually feel snuggest on day one. That's on purpose. Our waistbands are designed to feel a little snug so the jeans don't slide down, and the denim relaxes slightly to your body as you wear it.
What you shouldn't do is buy a size you can barely close and hope it loosens up. Follow your measurement instead:
- Size by your waist for high and mid waisted styles, and by your hip for low waisted styles.
- Between sizes? Size up in black, because black fabric is always stiffer. Size down in the lightest washes, which are softer. Pastel is different, so check that style's size guide or email help@fitjeans.com.

How do I keep stretch jeans from losing their shape?
These habits make the biggest difference:
- Wash less. Jeans don't need washing after every wear. Air them out and spot clean small marks.
- Wash cold. Max 30°C / 86°F. Heat is the enemy of elastane.
- Turn them inside out. It protects the colour and the surface of the fabric.
- Use a mild detergent and skip the fabric softener. No bleach either.
- Never tumble dry. This is the big one. High heat can shrink denim and damage the stretch and fit. Read more in Can You Put Jeans in the Dryer?
- Air dry flat or hang by the waistband. Gently smooth the legs while damp.
- Iron on low, inside out, if you must. Our ironing guide covers how.
- Rotate your pairs. A rest day between wears gives the fibres time to recover.

Stretch jeans care cheat sheet
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Wash at 30°C / 86°F or below | Hot washes |
| Turn inside out | Wash them the right way out |
| Mild detergent | Fabric softener or bleach |
| Air dry | Tumble dry |
| Wash when needed | Wash after every wear |
| Choose your true size | Size down hoping they'll stretch |
Can I fix stretch jeans that have already lost their shape?
A normal cold wash and air dry often brings back a bit of snugness, because the cotton fibres tighten again as they dry. But if the elastane has been damaged by heat, the stretch won't fully return. That's why prevention matters more than a fix.
If a pair of FITJEANS has a problem you think isn't down to wear and care, email help@fitjeans.com with photos and tell us how you've washed them. Our team will take a look.
Does stretch denim fit differently from rigid denim?
Yes. Rigid denim (100% cotton or close) barely gives at first, then molds to your body over time. Stretch denim moves with you from day one and recovers better, which is why it's kinder to curves, gym-girl thighs and small waists. Our guide How Should Jeans Fit? compares the two in detail.
FAQ
Do stretch jeans lose their shape over time?
They relax a little with wear, which is normal. They lose their shape for good when heat, hot washes or fabric softener damage the elastane. Gentle care keeps them snug for longer.
Why do my jeans get baggy during the day?
Body heat and movement relax the cotton a little. Good stretch denim recovers after a wash or a rest day. If they get baggier every week, check your washing and drying routine, and your size.
Should I buy stretch jeans a size smaller?
No. Choose the size your measurements point to. If you're between sizes, size up in black and size down in the lightest washes. Pastel has its own guidance.
Does the dryer ruin stretch jeans?
High heat can shrink denim and damage the stretch and fit. Always air dry stretch jeans.
How often should I wash stretch jeans?
Only when they need it. Air them out between wears and spot clean small marks.
Which FITJEANS style has the most stretch?
360 High Waisted. It has 4-way stretch in width and length and stretches about 15–20% in length.
