Sellers and producers may also offer commercial guarantees, which apply independently from the legal guarantee. For example, you may see this GARAN label representing a commercial guarantee of durability offered by the producer at no additional cost and covering the entire good.

Stretchy Jeans That Keep Their Shape: A Buyer's Guide to 2-Way, 4-Way and Recovery

The short answer: The best stretchy jeans do two things: they stretch when you move, and they spring back when you stop. To choose a pair, look at the direction of the stretch (2-way stretches in width, 4-way in width and length), the recovery (does it snap back or bag out?), and the fabric weight. Then size by your measurements, not by how much the denim gives. At FITJEANS, 360 is our stretchiest fit with 4-way stretch, while Flared, Baggy, Contour and our other styles use 2-way stretch in width.

"Stretchy" is one of the most overused words in denim. Almost every pair claims it. But a jean that stretches a lot and never comes back is just a jean that gets baggy by lunchtime.

This guide is about choosing. If you already own stretch jeans and want them to last, read Do Stretch Jeans Lose Their Shape?, which covers care and lifespan.

What makes jeans stretchy?

Three things decide how a pair of jeans stretches:

  1. Elastane. Also called spandex or Lycra, it's the elastic fibre woven in with the cotton. Across our jeans and shorts, elastane makes up between 1.5% and 7.5% of the fabric. The exact blend varies by style and colour, so check the product page.
  2. The weave and direction. Most stretch denim only stretches across the leg (2-way). Some fabrics also stretch along the leg (4-way).
  3. The fabric weight. Thick denim feels like classic jeans with stretch. Light denim feels closer to leggings.

The elastane number alone doesn't tell you everything. A thick denim with a little elastane can feel firmer than a light denim with less. That's why it pays to read the whole description, not just one percentage.

What's the difference between 2-way and 4-way stretch jeans?

2-way stretch 4-way stretch
Stretches Across the leg (width) Across and along the leg (width and length)
Feels like Jeans that move with you Jeans with leggings-level freedom
Good for Most everyday fits, a structured shape Squats, long days, long legs
Watch for Choose the right length, it won't stretch longer Needs good recovery so it doesn't sag
FITJEANS styles Flared, Baggy, Contour, Capri, Bare, Raw Waist, Pastel 360 High Waisted

Our 360 stretches around 15–20% in length, which is great if you have longer legs, and it doesn't stretch out where it doesn't need to.

What is "recovery" and why does it matter more than stretch?

Recovery is how well denim returns to its shape after it stretches. It's the difference between jeans that look the same at 6 pm as they did at 8 am, and jeans with baggy knees and a saggy seat.

Signs of good recovery:

  • The knees don't bag after you've sat down for an hour.
  • The waist stays put instead of growing through the day.
  • After a wash and a rest, the jeans feel snug again.

Many of our styles list Recall-Technology™ in the product description, including 360 and our Flared fits. It's designed to help the jeans keep their shape after washing and wearing.

Which FITJEANS style is the stretchiest?

Here's how our fits compare, based on the stretch and fabric notes in our product descriptions:

Style Stretch Fabric feel Best if you want
360 High Waisted 4-way, stretches about 15–20% in length Medium-thick The most stretch, leggings comfort in real denim
Contour 2-way in width Light denim, "freedom to move" A sleek skinny that feels light
Flared 2-way in width, super stretchy Medium-thick Stretch through the thigh with a flare
Baggy 2-way in width Thick, stretchy denim Classic denim feel with room in the leg
Bare and Raw Waist 2-way in width, super stretchy Medium-thick A low waisted flare with stretch
Capri 2-way in width Light-medium Stretch and recovery in a cropped length

If "stretchy baggy jeans" sounds like a contradiction, it isn't. Many baggy jeans are made from rigid denim, which is why they often gap at the waist on curvy bodies. Our Baggy is cut roomy through the leg, with stretch denim that hugs your waist. See How Should Baggy Jeans Fit? for the details.

Browse a mix of our stretchiest pairs on our super stretchy jeans page, or go straight to the 360 collection.

Who needs the most stretch?

  • Gym girls and muscular thighs. Strong glutes and thighs with a smaller waist need stretch, or the jeans gap at the waist. Gym girls have been our biggest fans since day one. Read jeans for gym girls.
  • Curvy and hourglass shapes. Stretch denim follows the hip so a waist-fitted jean doesn't need to be sized up at the hip. See jeans with no waist gap.
  • Long legs. 4-way stretch gives a little extra length where you need it.
  • Long days. Desk days, travel and running around all day feel easier when the denim moves with you.

If you prefer a stiff, structured, 100% cotton jean that moulds slowly to you, stretch denim isn't for you, and that's fine. Our guide to stretch vs rigid denim explains the trade-off.

How should I size stretchy jeans?

This is where people go wrong. Stretchy doesn't mean "size down until it hurts", and it doesn't mean "size up for comfort".

  • Size by your measurements. For high and mid waisted styles, use your waist. For low waisted styles (Flared Low, Baggy Low, Bare, Raw Waist), use your hip.
  • Expect snug on day one. Our waistbands are a little snug on purpose so they don't slide down. Stretch jeans relax slightly as you wear them.
  • Don't buy a size you can barely close. Overstretched elastane wears out faster.
  • Between sizes? Size up in black, because black fabric is always stiffer, and size down in the lightest washes, which are softer. Pastel is different, so check the Pastel size guide or email help@fitjeans.com.
  • Length: measure from the crotch to the heel for flared and baggy styles, and to the ankle bone for skinny styles like Contour and 360.

Every chart is in our size guide hub, and How to Find Your Jeans Size Online walks you through measuring.

How do I keep stretchy jeans stretchy?

Heat is the enemy of elastane. The short version:

  • Wash at max 30°C / 86°F, inside out.
  • Skip the fabric softener.
  • Never tumble dry. Air dry instead.

The full routine is in our Denim Care Guide.

FAQ

What are the stretchiest jeans?

Jeans with 4-way stretch, which stretches in both width and length, usually feel the stretchiest. At FITJEANS that's our 360 High Waisted, which stretches around 15–20% in length.

What's the difference between 2-way and 4-way stretch?

2-way stretch denim stretches across the leg. 4-way stretch denim stretches across and along the leg, so it gives more freedom when you squat, sit or bend.

Do stretchy jeans lose their shape?

They relax a little during the day, which is normal. They lose their shape for good when heat or harsh washing damages the elastane. Wash cold, skip softener and never tumble dry.

Should I size down in stretchy jeans?

Not automatically. Size by your waist (or hip for low waisted styles). Between sizes, size up in black and size down in the lightest washes. For Pastel, check the size guide or email help@fitjeans.com.

Are there stretchy baggy jeans?

Yes. Our Baggy is roomy through the leg but made from thick, stretchy denim that hugs your waist, so it doesn't gap like rigid baggy jeans often do.

How much elastane is in stretchy jeans?

Across our jeans and shorts it ranges from 1.5% to 7.5%. The exact blend depends on the style and colour, so check the product page.
