The short answer: A waist gap happens when jeans are cut for a straighter body, so they fit your hips but leave room at the back of the waist. To avoid it, choose super-stretch jeans with a snug waistband and size them by your waist, not your hips. At FITJEANS, that's exactly how our fits are built: you pick your size from your waist measurement, and the stretch takes care of your hips, bum and thighs.
If you've ever pulled on a pair of jeans, done up the button and then felt that little tunnel of air at the back of your waistband, you're in good company. It's the reason FITJEANS exists. We started in Oslo in 2018 because we knew the struggle: jeans were either too loose around the waist or way too tight around the legs. So we set out to make jeans that hug you in all the right places. No waist gap, no squeezing.
This guide explains why waist gaps happen, what to look for in curvy jeans, and how to size yourself so the next pair fits the first time.
Why do jeans gap at the back of the waist?
Most jeans are drafted from a set ratio between waist and hips. If your hips, bum or thighs are fuller compared with your waist, you're stuck choosing between two bad options:
- Size for your hips and the waist is too big, so it gaps at the back.
- Size for your waist and the jeans won't pull up over your hips, or they squeeze your thighs.
Hourglass and pear shapes feel this most, and so do a lot of gym girls with strong glutes and thighs. Sitting down makes it worse, because your body changes shape and the back of the waistband pulls away.
How do you find jeans that don't gap at the waist?
There are two main ways brands solve the problem, and it helps to know which one you're buying:
- A curvy pattern. The jeans are cut with extra room through the hip and thigh compared with the waist. This works well, especially in rigid denim, but you still need your waist-to-hip ratio to match the pattern.
- Stretch plus a snug waistband. The denim stretches to follow your hips and thighs, while the waistband is designed to sit close so it doesn't slide down or stand away from your back.
FITJEANS takes the second route. Our waistbands are designed to be a little snug so the jeans don't slide down, and from the waist down the denim has super stretch. That's why our size charts focus on your waist, and why lower body measurements usually aren't needed for our high and mid waisted styles.
What should curvy jeans feel like when they fit?
Use this quick checklist in front of the mirror:
- Waistband: snug and flat against your lower back when you stand and when you sit. If you can easily slide a whole hand into the back, it's too big.
- Hips and bum: smooth, with no pulling lines across the front and no excess fabric under the bum.
- Thighs: close, but you can sit, crouch and walk up stairs without feeling held back.
- Rise: a high rise sits at your natural waist, which is usually where a curvy waist is smallest. That's the spot that gives the most "snatched" look.
- Length: the hem lands where the style is meant to land (more on that below).
A brand-new pair of stretch jeans should feel snug in the waistband at first. That's on purpose.
Which FITJEANS styles work best for curves?
Here's how our main fits compare for curvy bodies:
| Fit | How it fits | Size by | Lengths | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flared (high waisted) | Hugs waist, hips and thighs, then opens from the knee | Waist | Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours) | Between sizes: size up in black, size down in lightest washes; Pastel differs |
| Flared Mid | Same leg as Flared, sits a little lower | Waist | Regular only | Flattering curved back seam |
| Contour (skinny) | Close from waist to ankle, a leggings-like feel | Waist | Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours) | No front pockets, for a smooth line |
| 360 High Waisted | Our stretchiest skinny | Waist | Regular only | Stretches 15–20% in length |
| Baggy | Snug at the waist, roomy through the leg | Waist | Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours) | Has real front and back pockets |
| Low Waisted, Bare and Raw Waist styles | Sit lower on the hips | Hip | One length | Measure where the jeans will sit |
Flared jeans are a favourite for hourglass shapes because they mirror your natural balance: fitted through the waist and hips, then a little volume from the knee that also makes your legs look longer. If you like a sleek look, Contour gives a waist-gap-proof skinny that feels a lot like your favourite leggings.
How do I pick my size for curvy jeans?
This is where most waist gaps are won or lost. Follow these steps:
- Measure your waist at its narrowest point, usually just around the belly button. Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
- Find the size guide for the exact style you want. Different collections have different charts, so don't assume your Flared size and your Baggy size are the same.
- Match your waist to the chart. For our Flared and Skinny fits, the waist ranges are:
| Size | Waist (cm) | Waist (in) |
|---|---|---|
| XXS | 55–60 | 21.5–23.5 |
| XS | 60–65 | 23.5–25.5 |
| S | 65–70 | 25.5–27.5 |
| M | 70–75 | 27.5–29.5 |
| L | 75–80 | 29.5–31.5 |
| XL | 80–85 | 31.5–33.5 |
Our Baggy chart runs one step up (XXS 60–65 cm to XL 85–90 cm), which is why checking the style's own chart matters.
- Ignore your hip number for high and mid waisted styles. The stretch is designed to handle it. For low waisted styles (Flared Low, Bare, Raw Waist and Baggy Low Waisted), it's the other way around: use your hip measurement, taken where the jeans will sit.
- If you're in between sizes, remember the waistband is meant to be snug, then adjust by wash: size up in black (stiffer fabric), size down in the lightest washes. Pastel is different — use that style's size guide or email help@fitjeans.com.
Stuck between two sizes? Send your waist and inseam to our customer service team and we'll help you choose. Personal sizing help is one of our favourite things to do.
Does the length affect the waist gap?
Not directly, but the wrong length makes jeans pull and twist, and that can drag the waistband down at the back. Many of our styles come in Petite, Regular and Tall, so you don't have to choose between a perfect waist and a perfect hem. Measure your inseam (crotch to heel for flares and baggy, crotch to ankle bone for skinny) and compare it with the style's chart.
How do I keep my jeans fitting like day one?
Stretch denim keeps its shape best when you treat it gently. Wash cold (max 30°C / 86°F), inside out, with a mild detergent, and skip fabric softener and bleach. Always air dry: high heat from a tumble dryer can shrink denim and damage the stretch and fit. You don't need to wash after every wear, so spot clean small marks instead.
FAQ
Why do my jeans fit my hips but gap at the waist?
Because most jeans use a straighter waist-to-hip ratio than your body has. Choosing a curvy pattern or a super-stretch jean sized by your waist solves it.
Should I size up or down to avoid a waist gap?
Size by your waist. At FITJEANS the waistband is designed to be a little snug, so choose the size your waist measurement points to. If you're between sizes: size up in black (stiffer fabric), size down in the lightest washes, and for Pastel check the size guide or ask help@fitjeans.com.
Are high waisted jeans better for curvy women?
Often, yes. A high rise sits at your natural waist, which for most curvy bodies is the narrowest point, so it holds well and shows off your shape.
Do FITJEANS have a waist gap when you sit down?
Our fits are designed to be waist gap proof: the snug waistband and super-stretch denim are made to stay close to your back when you move and sit.
Do I need to measure my hips for FITJEANS?
Not for our high and mid waisted styles, since the denim has super stretch. For low waisted styles like Flared Low, Bare and Raw Waist, use your hip measurement.
What sizes do FITJEANS come in?
XXS to XL, with Petite, Regular and Tall lengths on many styles. Each collection has its own size guide.
