Best Jeans for an Hourglass Figure: How to Get a Snatched Waist Without the Gap

The short answer: The best jeans for an hourglass figure are high waisted, super-stretch jeans that you size by your waist, so the waistband sits flat at your narrowest point while the denim follows your hips and thighs. Flared jeans are the classic hourglass match because they mirror your natural balance. At FITJEANS, Flared, Contour, 360 and Baggy are all built with a snug waistband and stretch below it, so a small waist and fuller hips are not a contradiction.

If you have an hourglass shape, you probably know this routine: the jeans fit your hips and thighs perfectly, you do up the button, and there it is. A gap at the back of the waist you could post a letter through. Size down and they won't get past your hips. It's not your body. It's the pattern.

This guide covers what actually works for hourglass curves, which FITJEANS fits to look at, and how to size them so you get it right the first time. For the full story behind the waist gap, see our guide to jeans with no waist gap.

What is an hourglass figure, in denim terms?

In body-shape language, an hourglass means your bust and hips are fairly balanced and your waist is clearly smaller. In denim language, it means one thing: the difference between your waist and hip measurement is bigger than most jeans are cut for.

Most jeans are drafted around a straighter waist-to-hip ratio. That's why hourglass shapes (and plenty of pear shapes and gym girls with strong glutes) end up choosing between a waist that fits and hips that fit. You shouldn't have to.

What should jeans for an hourglass figure do?

Look for these four things:

  1. A high rise. It sits at your natural waist, which is usually the narrowest point. That's where the waistband can hold flat against your back.
  2. Stretch from the waist down. Super-stretch denim follows your hips, bum and thighs instead of forcing you to size up for them.
  3. A snug waistband. It should feel close, not loose. A slightly snug band is what stops the gap when you sit.
  4. A leg shape that keeps your balance. Flares and fitted skinnies show your shape. Baggy works too when the waist still fits.

Our hourglass jeans page explains the idea in one line: FITJEANS are designed to follow the arc of your hips up to a defined waist, so the denim sits flat against your back.

Which FITJEANS styles are best for an hourglass figure?

Fit Why it works for hourglass Rise Size by Lengths
Flared Hugs waist, hips and thighs, then opens from the knee. Mirrors your proportions and lengthens legs High Waist Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours)
Flared Mid Same flare, sits a little lower, with a curved back seam Mid Waist Regular only
Contour Close from waist to ankle with a leggings-like feel. Shows your shape High Waist Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours)
360 High Waisted Our stretchiest skinny, with 4-way stretch in width and length High Waist Regular only
Baggy Snug at the waist, roomy through the leg. Relaxed without hiding your waist High Waist Petite, Regular, Tall (selected colours)
Bare, Raw Waist, Flared Low Low waisted flares for a hip-line look Low Hip One length

If you only buy one pair, make it a high waisted Flared. It's the style hourglass bodies in our 450,000+ community come back to most, because the fitted top and flared hem frame your waist instead of fighting it.

Our Straight Leg style is discontinued. If you were after a balanced everyday leg, Flared gives the most hourglass-friendly line, Baggy gives relaxed volume, and Contour or 360 give a sleek fit.

How do I size jeans for an hourglass figure?

Here's the rule that changes everything: size by your waist, not your hips (for high and mid waisted styles).

  1. Measure your waist at its narrowest point, usually around the belly button. Snug, not tight.
  2. Open the size guide for the exact style. Our Flared and Skinny charts share the same waist ranges, while Baggy runs one step up.
  3. Pick the size your waist points to. The stretch is designed to handle your hips.
  4. Measure your inseam (crotch to heel for flares and baggy, crotch to ankle bone for skinny) and pick Petite, Regular or Tall where available.

Flared and Skinny waist ranges:

Size Waist (cm) Waist (in)
XXS 55–60 21.5–23.5
XS 60–65 23.5–25.5
S 65–70 25.5–27.5
M 70–75 27.5–29.5
L 75–80 29.5–31.5
XL 80–85 31.5–33.5

Between sizes? Size up in black, because black fabric is always stiffer. Size down in the lightest washes, which are softer. Pastel is different, so check that style's size guide or email help@fitjeans.com.

For low waisted styles (Bare, Raw Waist, Flared Low, Baggy Low), flip it: measure your hips where the jeans will sit and use the hip chart. Our guide to low waisted jeans walks through it.

How should hourglass jeans fit when they're right?

Do the mirror test, then the sitting test:

  • Back waistband: flat against your lower back, standing and sitting. No hand-sized gap.
  • Hips and bum: smooth, no pulling lines across the front, no baggy fabric under the bum.
  • Thighs: close, but you can squat and climb stairs comfortably.
  • Front: no strain at the zip or the button.
  • Hem: flares cover most of your shoe; skinnies sit at the ankle without bunching.

A new pair of stretch jeans should feel snug in the waistband for the first wear. That's on purpose. For a full checklist, see How Should Jeans Fit?

How do I style jeans for an hourglass figure?

You don't need to "balance" anything. You already are. Styling is about showing the waist:

  • Tuck it. A tucked tee or bodysuit shows off the high rise.
  • Crop it. A top that ends at the waistband works with every fit.
  • Belt it. A belt on a high waisted flare highlights your smallest point.
  • Heels or platforms with flares. They make the long leg line even longer. Our flared styling guide has outfit formulas.
  • Fitted top with baggy. If you love baggy jeans, keep the top close so the waist stays visible.

The only thing that really hides an hourglass shape is a long, loose top over the waistband, and even that's fine when it's the mood you want.

FAQ

What jeans are best for an hourglass figure?

High waisted stretch jeans sized by your waist. Flared jeans are the classic choice because they hug the waist and hips, then open from the knee. Fitted skinnies and baggy jeans with a snug waist work too.

Why do jeans always gap at the waist on hourglass shapes?

Most jeans are cut for a straighter waist-to-hip ratio. If you size for your hips, the waist is too big. Super-stretch denim sized by your waist solves it.

Should hourglass figures wear high or mid rise jeans?

High rise usually works best, because it sits at your narrowest point. Mid rise can work when the waistband still fits snug.

Are skinny jeans good for an hourglass figure?

Yes, when they're stretchy enough to follow your hips without gaping at the back. Contour and 360 are our skinny options.

Should I size up for my hips?

Not for FITJEANS high and mid waisted styles. Size by your waist and let the stretch handle your hips. Only low waisted styles use your hip measurement.

Can hourglass figures wear baggy jeans?

Absolutely. Choose a baggy fit that's snug at the waist, like FITJEANS Baggy, and pair it with a fitted or tucked top.

Your waist deserves jeans that fit it. Measure your waist, check our size guides and shop hourglass jeans or our Flared collection. New here? Sign up to our newsletter for 10% off your first order.
